This strategy was used with Group B for suffixes and common EOG words. Students were given a list of vocabulary words and instructed to choose a word and draw a picture to represent what they predicted the word to mean. After giving them a few minutes to draw, students randomly went around the room to share their pictures. An example for each of the seven words were shared. After sharing, they wrote down the rest of the words and their predictions for them.
Our thoughts: When we first planned this strategy we felt it would be a quick and easy way to introduce vocabulary since many students are visual learners. For the most part this proved to be true, but for our ESL and EC students it was a longer process since they needed to connect to the word before they could draw an adequate representation of the word. Many students enjoyed the chance to draw and share their pictures with their classmates.
Student thoughts...
“I am visual learner and when I look at the picture it gets stuck in my head and I remember the word”
“Drawing a picture, because I love to draw and it really implanted in my brain.”
“It is easier for me to remember pictures than words.”
“Pictures are the easiest to remember especially if it’s a funny picture”
